In ancient times, every farm in Pohorje had its own blacksmith shop. They were necessary for repairment of agricultural and forestry tools.
The craft of metalworking, particularly with iron and steel, has been known in rural areas since the 10th century, while it only reached the towns two centuries later. Today, blacksmith shops are almost non-existent. However, Kovačija pri Kovaču preserves its 200-year-old tradition of blacksmithing. This tradition eloquently showcases the heartfelt work of the local residents and intertwines the past with the present.
In the blacksmith shop, you can find preserved machines and tools that the ancestors used on the farm (such as a spring hammer, hand drill, large forge, etc...). Under the guidance of a blacksmith master, you can experience the authentic process of transforming iron into a finished product. All visitors can also make a souvenir to take home. Listen to traditional stories from the past while enjoying a traditional blacksmith’s snack and drink.
